Happy Monday!
Today, I received an email from a guy, Chad, who wants me to do a video review giving one of our dogs a bath with his dog shampoo bar. In the video (up to 5 minutes) he'd like me to discuss the details of the soap along with my thoughts. He didn't mention compensation.
When I read the email, I laughed. The idea of giving one of our dogs a bath while recording it on video just cracks me up. I might try it just to see if it's possible, but I'm not sure if I'll except this opportunity. I feel like people don't understand what goes in to blogging when they send these requests to us.
Have you received this email? Will you do the video for Chad?

and other components. :)
Permalink Reply by Kimberly Gauthier on February 18, 2013 at 3:00pm I quoted him $100 for the video and explained that it's because I have to do multiple takes, upload, edit, and upload to YouTube and promote. And I need another human to help me out.
I understand that a lot of these small businesses don't have the funds to market their products, but if that's the case, I wonder if they'd consider trying to do this themselves - we all have to start somewhere and it will save loads of money.
Chad came back and offered $150. Now I'm nervous; I've never had anyone come up - but it does show that he appreciates bloggers.
Permalink Reply by Colby Morita on February 18, 2013 at 4:30pm I think you may be undervaluing yourself. I think the time compensation alone is worth $150. The whole process will probably take at least 5 working hours. More importantly he'll be tapping into your audience which is probably equally as valuable as your time. After all you spent countless hours building your audiences on your Blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.
At least at the end of the day you'll have a clean dog :)

Permalink Reply by Caren Osrin Gittleman on February 18, 2013 at 5:35pm didn't receive it and wouldn't do it.......you should tell Chad that it is a known fact that when posting videos online they should be under 3 minutes......most people won't sit and watch a five minute video, I don't care how good it is! When I see videos that long, I'm GONE!
Permalink Reply by Kathy H Porter on February 18, 2013 at 8:49pm Here's a thought: Raise that $100 to $150.00 plus the prep time which is going to be another 2 hours easy and then let him know that you'd also like a written agreement for a percentage of each sale (you want some "residual" that results when this video goes viral because you darn well know that videos are hot. The fact that he came back so quickly with $150.00 should tell you something. Even then, I might not do it for this guy...but, you might think about doing it for your own brand. That's when you're not doing the other million and two things that you already do. lol

Permalink Reply by Kimberly Gauthier on February 18, 2013 at 8:53pm Thanks! I got $150 from him. Completely paid. I told him that the review will be complete 30 days after I receive the product :)
I didn't want to get into the percentage of sales - it's a great idea, but it's so much easier for me to work through affiliate links rather than making deals directly with vendors. If I were doing this full time, then I'd have the time to create cool contracts. Just something to look forward to :)
Permalink Reply by Colby Morita on February 19, 2013 at 1:16pm I can't wait to see the video! Let us know after you upload it to YouTube.
Permalink Reply by Kimberly Gauthier on February 19, 2013 at 5:13pm I'll also how difficult or easy it was to take the video (how many takes, etc). This will be a new one for me.
Permalink Reply by Kimberly Gauthier on March 11, 2013 at 7:58am Update! I did the video. The hardest part (which turned out to be super easy) was combining two videos. I did one on the sofa then one in the bathroom and combined them together for the video...http://youtu.be/2WTm1bErA1k
