Recently rather than just put blood, sweat, and tears into my social media efforts I decided to run a few ads starting off with a free $50 Facebook ad credit I received. I've had some great results based on number of new likes and engagement on my Facebook page.
Now I'm wondering how do I measure success? Is it the number of new likes? Engagement? Is it the number of referrals back to my blog?
Among other things I'm measuring the number of referrals back to my blog which are 7 times higher than this same time a year ago.
I'm sure it's different for everybody, but how do you measure your social media success?

Glad to hear you've had success with a FB ad. Once I have more local content on my blog, I was thinking about running an ad. I was hoping since my site's main target audience are local pet owners an ad might help get the word out.
I think deciding where to engage people- on FB or your blog has been a big conundrum for many people. What do you have in mind to bring people over to your blog?
It is out of y budget too but I am getting a chance to use it for free. I want to use it as much as I can while I have it to learn.....that is why I offered to run a report for you. I will let you know once I get it going and figured out. I should know more in a week or two.

Hi Jessica,
I first started my Facebook campaign to 1. use my ad credit before it expired, 2. increase the number of likes on my page, and 3. learn a little more about Facebook Ads. It's nice to have a larger audience and it gives me a chance to share information from some of the non-profits (assistance animals, rescues, shelters, etc) I follow with more people.
I always think it's a good idea to get people back to your blog since you own your blog. Facebook, Twitter, G+ can shut you down any time they want and you can lose all of your followers.
So my current goal is to get my social media followers over to my blog as visitors and hopefully subscribers.
Wow $500 a month! That's a bit out of my budget. I'd love to hear more about it after you have a chance to play with it a little.
Thanks for the input!

It depends on your goals. I am not trying to "state the obvious" but you have to start with a "campaign" or "effort" goal, determine what will indicate it is working for you and measure that. What is important to measure matters on a case-by-case basis.
I have ran several Facebook ads before. Facebook ads are generally designed to get new likes for your page...so the success of the campaign would be measured in new likes.
Engagement is very important but something you measure from within your social media page or blog. You would likely measure engagement if you wanted to know if the types of information you were posting, and the titles/descriptions you were writing, were of interest to your audience (grabbing their attention).
I am working on analytics, measurement and strategies right now in my social media certificate program. Feel free to email me if you have any specific questions. We are getting ready to demo a powerful, third-party analytics tool and I would be happy to run a free report for you (the program is regularly $500 a month and is designed to primarily track engagement levels).

StumbleUpon is still my top referral site. Not sure what that means about me or my followers elsewhere.

As far as I know the Twitter numbers are listed as t.co / referral.
christie zizo said:Yeah, I saw that. It doesn't seem to give me Twitter numbers. I'm not entirely sure about my numbers on there.
Colby Morita said:Hi Christie, if you're running Google Analytics you can see how many referrals you are getting from the different social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, etc).
christie zizo said:I am interested in tracking that as well. I've seen my numbers steadily increase in the last couple of months, but I haven't quite figured out how to track it.
I also haven't gotten much in the way of subscriptions. I have a button on the sidebar, but I don't get much traffic from it.
Permalink Reply by Colby Morita on February 6, 2013 at 8:23pm Keep your eye out for the $50 credits that Facebook sends out from time to time or if you're looking for hosting some of the web hosts will give you a free ad credit for joining their hosting service.
I've been trying to share 2-5 pieces of content everyday. I try to include at least 1 link back to my blog from the archives everyday. I added links on my Facebook about page. I also have app boxes for my blog, contact form, and newsletter (unfortunately, this app is currently not working). I've also been meaning to update my cover photo although you can't add contact information according to Facebook guidelines.
Do you have any other ideas for getting readers from FB to your blog?

Permalink Reply by Colby Morita on February 6, 2013 at 8:27pm I haven't done too much with StumbleUpon recently, but when I did SU visitors really seemed to like images.
