Download BlogPaws Be the Change - The Little Book of Big Change

I'm being flooded with anonymous spam.  And I do mean flooded.  20-50 anonymous spam blog comments per day on various blog posts.  So far Blogger has caught all but 1 and either marked them for moderation or spam.

Has anyone else experienced this?  Will it stop any time soon?  Any idea what triggers such activity?

Thanks!

I don't have a large following so I only got one message from some guy that makes animal mail boxes  but there was a link to his site, so I guess that is not anonymous-but it was still soliciting business.

I use Wordpress and 20-30 spam comments a day is typical for me. Akismet usually always sends them to my Spam box so I just have to empty it every few days. I always look through them quickly to make sure legitimate comments have not gotten caught in there somewhere. Sometimes that happens. Also, sometimes the spam comments get missed and, as you said, they get sent to moderation. I just mark them as spam and delete them.

It's been my understanding that the more popular your blog is, the more spam you will get. Maybe that is not true but it helps me to look at all of the spam in a positive light :)

I would be interested in what other bloggers have to say but what you describe is pretty typical for my blog. Perhaps you have been lucky up until now?

Wow!  That's crazy!  I clicked over to this discussion, because I've been experiencing a lot of spam over on Facebook.

I'm the same as you Sue, I'm sick of it i get about 10 - 20 a day. I had to change to moderate coments on blogger because i was sick of all the comments on my blog especialy the ones linking to porn sites, at least now i can delete them before they apear on my blog.

I wouldn't mind but none of the comments make sense and have nothing to do with the blog post I've had people thanking me for the holiday to Barbados that they've won, if i could afford to give away a holiday to Barbados i would of took it myself.

That sounds typical Sue! I was using LiveFyre as a comment system on my one Wordpress (self-hosted) blog and it took care of all the spam so I forgot about it. I quickly remembered what a pain it was when I stopped using LiveFyre. I also would glance through the spam because I didn't want to delete a legitimate comment.

I don't know of anything to help with Blogger, but for Wordpress, I started using a plugin on my current blog that stops the spambots and I'm on day 5 with 0 spam. I'm just hoping it doesn't affect how others see my comments. It is suppose to switch things up with my comment form like putting the email before the name which the spambots aren't configured for. Once it detects a spambot it blocks the comment and hopefully the little pesty bot moves on.

Thanks, Jessica.   I laughed so loudly that I woke the dogs!  I guess I should be flattered that I'm so "popular."

Seriously, I'm not having any problems handling them, it's just so strange to get so many.  Previously, there'd be a few - maybe about 5 - a day.  It is the sheer volume that is unbelievable.

Let me know when you do that giveaway.  I could use a trip to Barbados!

So far, Blogger is catching these.  Some actually make some sense... but have horrible links.

To clarify - Blogger is catching them.  They either go to "Awaiting Moderation" or to "Spam" and I go in and delete daily.   That's not a problem (at least so far.)

It is just that they've increased dramatically.  In fact, since I originally posted today, there have been 23 more... so my count for today is nearly 80!!   I'm trying to figure out if I've done something to trigger them.

Which plugin is that Dawn?

BotBlocker. I read about it on one of the WP blogs I follow and decided to give it a try especially since a lot of the spam seemed to be the same.

Cat Chat is on blogger and I used to have that problem until I used comment moderation. Once I started that it stopped
