Twitter hashtags
Finally - I understand what these pesky symbols are and why it's important to use them. So, fellow pet bloggers, what are the accepted hashtags that pet bloggers use?

It really depends on the event...Each twitter party has it's own hashtag...for example the Nip club parties are #nipclub...Monday nights at 8 est are #petchat Just have to see what's being used

Some that I use include #pets #cats #dogs #veterinarians #puppies #kittens #blogpaws #amreading #amwriting
The rule of paw is use only 1-3 in your tweet...and then when someone re-tweets, change the hashtag so it's not a repeat to those groups but is broadcast to new eyeballs. *s*

For me, it depends on the event too. If I'm writing about a brand, I'll use hashtags about their product. Otherwise, I might do it on a subject, i.e. #dogrescue #dogcare #dogfood etc.

what about #doglover #dogs - are these too general?

Ah. So, how do you then change the hashtag for a re-tweet? If Kim tweets about her blog post with #dogcare as the hashtag and you want to retweet that, would you change the "dogcare" to another hashtag?

When you "click" the RT button at least from TweetDeck you can edit the tweet before it's sent. So if someone had already sent the tweet to #dogcare rather than send to the same hashtag I might change that to #petcare.
As @Gizmo Geodog says, it can be helpful to see what's "trending" too--what's currently being read and RT'd and get in on that.

Yeah, I usually use #pet, #dog, or the hashtag of whatever twitter party I'm attending...

And if you wanted to reach a wider audience than a particular twitter party, you could use some of the more general ones, like #dogs #dogcare etc.... right?

Hmmm....Interesting. I have never heard about the changing the hashtag with your retweet. Makes sense.
A hashtag makes your tweet more searchable for a particular caregory. If I, say, am tweeting about a pet rescue I might type #animalrescue, #petrescue, #adopt, etc in the search bar. I use whichever has the most recent activity and/or is most relevant for my tweet. -

If you DON'T change the hashtag, then you end up with the same tweet going into that same pot over and over and over. *shrug* There are lots of hashtags that can be relevant and this also prevents those tweets that go out comprised of nothing but hashtags and bit.ly url, I hate those and almost never click on 'em.

Wait! This is new (to me): I can put the hashtag symbol with a keyword into search on Twitter? I really like that! (Bear with me - you guys probably already know all of this stuff while I'm like a kid in a cyberspace candy store!) lol
