What do you do when your content goes viral for someone else?

Last week I posted a link to a picture on my Facbook page and it got picked up by a very large site (nearly 3 million likes on their Facebook page).  Here's the image:

apache-face.jpg

Just in case you didn't click the link here are the numbers I saw when scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed:

The only problem was that they did not share my link, but instead took the image and uploaded it as their own. :(  So virtually zero of the above traffic made it's way back to my blog or Facebook page.

What would you do in this situation?

It's up to 43 now! but that's still very low considering the post I did 30 minutes earlier has already reached over 9,000 people.  It's very unusual.  I'll be doing some testing over the next few days.

I never really understand Facebook's algorithims (which I can't spell either) but something about that may be factoring in to why only 23 people saw what you thought you shared with a larger audience.

I've shared old content from other pages in the past and I had normal results.  It's really weird.  The only thing  I can think of is that it has something to do with sharing it so close to the post before it.

I'll try again tomorrow and see what happens.  I'll keep you posted.

Hi Caren,

I'm thinking about messaging them just out of principle.  The post already ran it's course so getting credit now doesn't do too much, but it does bother me that they are such a large site and not giving credit where credit is due.

Thanks,
Colby

Colby -

I have been thinking more about the content you shared on mine. I don't see how it could NOT have to do with Edgerank. If you came up with another idea, let me know.

Here is an idea to test the edgerank though - the share of the post called "how do you sleep at night" - which was a crappy sketch of how I sleep with the dogs at night- was wildly popular (therefore has a higher Edgerank). I posted in on 12/2/12 but can't access it from my page (for some reason it won't let me see anything between 11/11/12 and January 1st 2013) or I would provide you a direct link to it. If you can find that and want to share it it might be an interesting experiment.

Let me know if you have any insights after your testing please.

So, whoever swiped your photo, deleted your web site? That stinks!

Hi Kathy,

The picture is actually of my last guide dog puppy, Apache and a friend's Husky pup, Alchemy.  I just happened to catch a funny moment with the two.

It was one of the few photos I added my URL to the bottom, but I guess it really didn't help me out.  I was hoping that anyone who used the image would at least give some link credit since the URL was right there in the image.

Thanks for your advice!

Colby

Hi Colby - the photo you shared - did you create it? (Is it your original content?) Because if you took the photo and then layered it with the text, it should be pretty easy (the next time) to add the URL of your web site to the bottom of the photo. If you didn't create it, the next time you want to use one of your original photos to create something like this (it's called a meme - which you may already be familiar with), just remember to include your web site URL inside the photo so that it goes wherever the photo goes.

Having said all of that, I just read your comment about the water mark. If I were you, I'd be quietly peeved too. At this stage, I'm not sure what would be your best course of action, except to be aware that if they did it once, they may very well do it again.

I couldn't agree with you more and I would do the same

I shared the second post and the numbers are still on the low side, but within the normal range.  My link posts usually reach between 1,500 - 5,000 people.

Your second post is currently at 1,611.  That's a vast improvement over the first one which is now at 76.

Hmmm....might it be just be because is not lab or guide dog related?

When you look at the number at the bottom of the post......how many people " saw this" on these posts compared to normal?

As of right now:

1,793 people saw the stick figure post
91 people saw the sunshine post

Normal for link posts is between 1,500 - 5,000.  Images usually do much better 5,000 - 20,000.  I would have expected the sunshine post to get at least somewhere near 5,000.

Yeah...the only thing I can figure is that EdgeRank thinks we suck so they didn't show it as much to your followers :) Have you tried this experiment recently with another page?

This is the first time I've seen something like this happen on my Facebook page.  Do Doxies not get along with Labs? :)

I'm going to keep playing around with this.  I'll let you know if I find anything new.
