I've had a Virtual Private Server (VPS) account with HostGator for the past 2 years. Recently my site has been going down about once a day. I talked to tech support and even they don't seem to know the exact problem and said that upgrading my VPS may or may not help.
Just wondering...what web host and hosting plan are you using and have you experienced any problems?
Permalink Reply by jen dehaan on February 4, 2013 at 11:50pm Could you duplicate and run WP locally to do the testing? There are also some staging options that might help. Then you could do the plugin testing safely and not muck with your actual site.
There are some ideas here: http://wpmu.org/10-ways-to-set-up-a-testing-environment-for-wordpress/
Permalink Reply by Colby Morita on February 5, 2013 at 2:08am I have not setup a testing environment, but I have thought about it. Maybe it's a good time to give it a try. Thanks for the information and the link.

Permalink Reply by Emily on February 5, 2013 at 10:26am I use WordPress. It's really easy and I haven't experienced any problems with it so far. Here is my blog so you can see if maybe yours would work to? http://lifeasalfie.com

Permalink Reply by jen dehaan on February 5, 2013 at 10:45pm As far as I know, Wordpress themselves are still either free or VIP.
VIP is in the stratosphere: http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/

Permalink Reply by Bonnie, owned by Cheysuli on February 5, 2013 at 10:49pm You can also do a premium upgrade on the .com http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/custom-domains/
Which allows you to have your own domain name. They have several other upgrades that allow you to basically get hosting of a sort there.
I looked into for someone but I didn't like the way they sort of parceled things out for low prices but to get everything you could spend a fortune.
Permalink Reply by Colby Morita on February 5, 2013 at 11:02pm WOW! I don't think I'll be going VIP anytime soon.

Permalink Reply by Colby Morita on February 5, 2013 at 11:09pm Thanks for the link. I just took a look at the WordPress.com business bundle which offers unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth. That sounds very similar to shared hosting on many other plans. I'm guessing there is still a limit if you read the fine print.

Permalink Reply by jen dehaan on February 6, 2013 at 4:02pm Yeah, I believe that is just putting a custom domain on the .com style of Wordpress (no plugins!) Very, very different style of WP :)
Permalink Reply by Colby Morita on February 6, 2013 at 4:10pm Thanks Jen! By the way, since I removed 4 plugins that were taking up the most runtime on my blog I haven't had a crash. Fingers crossed that the problem is solved.
