I've had a Virtual Private Server (VPS) account with HostGator for the past 2 years.  Recently my site has been going down about once a day.  I talked to tech support and even they don't seem to know the exact problem and said that upgrading my VPS may or may not help.

Just wondering...what web host and hosting plan are you using and have you experienced any problems?

on the advice of a knowledgeable friend i went with dream host...it was one-click wp install and deal through lifehackers for$20/ for first year  http://lifehacker.com/5977662/get-a-year-of-dreamhost-our-favorite-...   not sure if deal is still good or not

I just switched to Host Gator; I have the Baby Plan, and I love it.

I left FatCow, because I was experiencing the same thing.  In my situation, my traffic became too big for FatCow to manage and they don't offer anything beyond a basic shared plan.

This doesn't sound like your situation.  Have you checked to see if you've been hacked (check out Sucuri.com) or if there's a Tim Thumb issue (there's a WP plugin for that one - something like Tim Thumb vulnerability checker or something).

My train is pulling into the station as I type so I can't find links for you, but I'll try to remember to look when I get home.

I've heard good things about dreamhost (I actually had a friend who worked there) and $20 for the first year sounds like a great deal.  Unfortunately, my site will no longer run on shared hosting, but I may consider one of the dreamhost VPS, cloud hosting packages, or dedicated server plans.

I had the same problem when I was on BlueHost.  One day they just shutdown my account and said I was getting too much traffic.  It's pretty frustrating when there's no upgrade option.

I don't think it's the Tim Thumb vulnerability as I keep everything up to date on my site, but I'll check as soon as I get home.

I have a feeling it might be one of my plugins.  Have you tried the P3 Plugin Profiler?  It pretty much tells you what plugins are slowing down your site.  I usually run it every few months and try to clean things up a bit.

Have you talked to anyone who used Synthesis Web Hosting?  I was thinking it might be a solution since I use the Genesis Framework.

What is a Virtual Private Server?  I've used Host Gator for almost 3 years - have their business plan whatever it's called and have 1 )never had a problem and 2) when I've had a need for customer service, their online and phone reps are amazing!

We use mediatemple for a bunch of sites all running WP, which is decent.

If you use wordpress and want really specialized hosting, WPEngine is very solid. I used them when building a very complicated wordpress community site, stretching the limits of WP is meant to do with an incredibly complex intermingling of plugins, and they had great support through the development process (a couple growing pains as their company grew, but we worked through them).... and then a second development process as we made a super-locked down site public. Their support agents are all WP devs, or at the very least very knowledgable. Fairly expensive though, comparatively.

I'm not much help because I use hostgator with no problems. However, I am a reseller and not a VPS account.

I'd check out WebHostingTalk.com.  You can either search through threads that reference Hostgator VPS and see what others are saying or you can search through and see which hosts are being recommended for VPS. If you like, post a similar query there to what you have here.  You'll get a lot of responses.  I know they'll probably want to know more--like stats about what you need from VPS and why.

Hi Bonnie, thank you for the information.  I may head on over there to see what people have to say about the different web hosts.

Hi Jen, I don't think I need something as complex as WPEngine.  My site is a fairly simple WordPress blog about my dogs.  I think the problem does have to do with plugins.  I just wish the HostGator tech support team could better help me identify the cause of the problem.

Hi Kathy, I've chatted with HostGator support about a half dozen times and they've always done their best to help me.  They just haven't been able to pin point the exact problem in this situation.  I'm going to chat with them again the next time my server crashes (it's actually been up for over 24 hours).

A Virtual Private Server is basically a step up from shared hosting.  It offers more security and you are allocated specific amounts of resources so you can scale your hosting package based on the size of your hosting (website) needs.

Usually the tech support suggests disabling all plugins and then adding them back one by one for stuff like that... (do you have a lot of plugins?  Back when I was working with over 80 of em, and many co-dependent ones, I always hated that answer... but sometimes it's easy to narrow down the more likely culprits)

I have 23 active plugins.  When I first started having these problems about 6 months ago tech support had me install the P3 Plugin Profiler which helped me identify the plugins that were taking up the most runtime.  I ran the P3 Plugin Profiler again today and disabled a few plugins I could do without.  We'll see if it helps.

Unfortunately, some of the plugins are pretty well integrated into the site and would require a decent amount of work before I would want to disable them.
