A certain hotel? Restaurant? Store? Wondering because more and more places are becoming pet friendly. So where would you visit if pets were allowed?Continue

Comment by Kathleen Mueller on January 20, 2013 at 5:43pm A long walk before the ride. It's amazing what a simple (long) walk will do for most problems with dogs. A tired dog is a good dog, and burning off that excess energy will mean less stress for her. Also, check your emotions at the car door! If you're anxious and worrying, she will wonder "What are my DogParents so worried about? I don't know, so I guess I should be worried and anxious, too!" Dogs are like a mirror, they reflect our moods and emotions right back onto us. Spend more time with her in the car as well. If the only rides she ever goes on are to the vet's office, or anywhere else not so pleasant, bring her on more excursions to get her to associate the car with "fun". Good luck!
Comment by Danielle E on January 20, 2013 at 5:28pm Thank you for your suggestions Mary and Pamela. I'll look into making a calming collar or spray or buying one.
I will probably be able to build up on time she's in the car because I'll be taking her on a camping trip, hikes and some other places this summer that is 30-1hr before we go on the really long car ride.
Comment by Pamela Douglas Webster on January 20, 2013 at 12:09pm Hi Danielle--Mary gave good advice. I'd also suggest building up to the time you expect to be on the road slowly. For example, going from a 1 hour trip to a 6 hour trip is pretty extreme.
Any chance you could take a 90 minute trip, 2 hour trip, prior to the vacation?
My dog does well driving but to get her used to riding in a bike cart, we built up slowly. It really helped.

Comment by Danielle E on January 20, 2013 at 11:24am This summer I'm bringing my dog on vacation for the first time, this will be her first time being in the car for more than an hour. Any tips traveling with a dog. She whines, pants and paces in the car, but I've found keeping the window open helps.
Comment by Kathy H Porter on September 1, 2012 at 5:34am Hi Marta - Rocco is gorgeous! Looking at him makes me miss the shepherd-husky mix we were honored to live with for 10 years!
Comment by Marta Banat on August 31, 2012 at 11:38pm Hi!
I'm Marta and I love to go on road trips with my Husky, Rocco. We live in Vancouver, BC and so far we went on 3-4 day trips to Tofino, South Cariboo and the Gulf Islands. You can read about them here:

In October we are planning a 2 week trip through the Rockies - I'm so excited for that!
I'm new to BlogPaws and I'm really looking forward to joining the community.
Comment by Carol Bryant on July 23, 2012 at 4:25pm Just bfound out that the town of Taos, New Mexico features over 70 percent of it allowing pets! It got me thinking, has anyone been to a town where they were continually rolling out the red carpet to pets? Not just at the dog park, but stores, parks, even eateries?
Comment by Linda Messina on May 5, 2012 at 12:03pm The longest I've 'dogpooled' it with Reba was Dallas to DC. 1360 miles in 2 days.
Wish we were going to conference Carol b/c we could have driven together! How fun!
Comment by Pepper Pomeranian on May 5, 2012 at 10:55am The longest I've driven with a pet in the car is 14 hours, over 2 days. I've made the trip with cats and with dogs, but not both at the same time. Pepper has also been on a 20+ hour train trip with me.
