I use Social media widget for all my social media links, and also for subscribing. All my subscription go through feedburner, and I have a link for email or RSS subscribers here. Setting up a blogroll is easy. Go to links, then link categories. Make a new category, add all the links and tell them which category to go in. Then in your widget area there is one called "links". Put it where you want it to be in the side bar. There are lots of great, easy plugins on Wordpress. I would love to help you more. Call me if you want some help, that would be easiest. Your new site looks great by the way!

I use the same setup as Mary. I paid someone to figure out the actual subscribe box for me so the colors matched exactly. There should me plenty of free ways to do it though.

Thank you!  it's getting there little by little...Mary was a tremendous help...She talked me through Jetpack and Social and Feedburner and so much else...I can't thank her enough...And I'm so grateful you all are taking the leap with me

I would only be a tiny bit wary of Feedburner in that Google has discontinued the project (including support). I would be a tiny bit concerned about them abandoning it in the future, and thus lose all of your subscribers one day.  I've used Feedburner for years and years (way before google bought it) with my old tech blogs, and am concerned about that happening in the future, so I moved back to my default RSS with my newer Dogthusiast blog.

Long story short, it may be a bit safer to use your default RSS (url/feed) with the Jetpack plugin widget for subscriptions.

Yeah... it can differ depending on your theme and plugin installs so I probably can't lead you to the setting (some allow you to set it, otherwise it can be done directly in code -- previously, my theme and plugins allowed me to set this, but currently I don't use them).

Otherwise, your subscription settings are available if you choose Jetpack > Subscriptions > Configure, and then the widget is under Appearance > Widgets (then wherever you put the subscription widget in your layout).  But by default, you don't set the RSS your site uses in these locations.  RSS config could also be under Settings somewhere (theme or plugin, or even site if a plugin added it there).

Can I agree with Jen that Jetpack is reasonably easy to set up. I did it and I am still learning SOO much about WordPress!

If you have a subscription widget I was also advised that the plug in Bad Behaviour (? spelling) is good for blocking/removing the oddballs that join mailing list for your details. Also Delete Bad Behavior Log (it deletes the HTTP log of the Bad Behaviour plug in so it doesn't take up space). 

A small plug in I recommend you can try too is CommentLuv - it is a simple thing to install. If anyone comments on your blog, it goes and finds their last blog post and adds it to the bottom of their comment. Not much you might think but I have discovered some nice blogs and been able to reciprocate the comment kindness all without any effort.

Comment Luv is awesome!! I installed it over a year ago and have loved it. It does make it easy to find new blogs, and to comment back on those who have stopped long enough to leave a comment.

Has anyone tried to integrate CommentLuv with Disqus?  It didn't work automatically, and I haven't looked into it further to figure out how to make them compatible (and I like to tread carefully when jumping into functions.php... sigh). Just wondering if anyone had already done the legwork or research and had some suggestions before I start the quest.

Jen,

Can you tell me the benefits you see in Disqus? I have seen it on several blogs but not felt inclined to use it. I am totally ignorant of any benefits I may be missing. 

I can vouch that Comment Luv is a simple plug in but can't verify its ability to work with another program unfortinately. I do LIKE CL though - it keeps me on my toes and I honour commenters by visitng their blogs in return!

I was researching the same thing you're talking about Jen. For people on Blogger, commentluv is not an option unless you do something like install it through disquss. I did find a good tutorial on it a while back but at the time the disqus site seemed to not be working. I wish I had saved the turtorial.
