I'm Adopting a New Furkid

I really hadn't planned to adopt so soon after adopting Minuit this summer, but I couldn't resist.  I adopted Min from Diabetic Cats in Need and so I follow them on Facebook.  This past weekend they posted a 10 year old diabetic Ragdoll in need of a new home after his mom died.

I really did wait for someone else to step up.  After 2 days with no interest, I emailed.  Needless to say Poughkeepsie should be arriving on Sunday.  I fell in love with Ragdolls after adopting Woody…

2's a company...3's a crowd.

I admit it...my dog sleeps with me.  Some people find this gross. Or dirty.  They think I will catch some disease that my dog has brought in from the outside.  I have yet to catch any cooties from the outside world from him. People catch diseases from other people.  That doesn't mean that we don't share a bed with them, do we? He has slept  with me since the day I got him at 5 weeks old.  I can't imagine him not being there now.. He's 10 months old and weighs quite a bit and takes up more…

Help Stop Dog Fighting!

A few years back, in California, the Human Society started an anti-dogfighting hotline.  It was so successful and received so many tips, that the hotline is now nation-wide.  There is up to a $5000 reward for a tip that leads to the arrest of somebody involved in dog fighting, and the number is 1-877-847-4787.  You can also go …

Shopping for Puppy Supplies

Owning a young pup can be both a challenge and a happy moment in your life. Consider the fact that a puppy is in many ways similar to a young baby and he will have various needs to tend to. You will have to master all the information regarding canine ownership before actually taking home a furry little puppy. Certain items will need to be purchased ahead of time so that the pup has everything he needs to live a comfortable life. You should investigate ahead as to the number of items and the… Continue

The Malatesta Pups are our September 25, 2011 Pups of the Week

There is a movie called The Great Escape. It was made when all those old or passed Hollywood stars were young and good looking. In the movie a number of prisoners escape from a Nazi prison camp. A handful stay free from capture. Others were captured. 50 were executed. The movie was based on real events. To a generation, when you mentioned "The 50" it meant something. The 50 were being transported back to the…

Myths, Realities, Horrors and Hopes – Getting to know a dog named Indigo – Part One

After seeing some pictures of dogs with ‘wheels’ we thought we’d like to profile one here on West Coast Dogs.  We were interested to learn more about paralyzed dogs and the challenges faced with owning one.  We contacted the owners of Indigo, a dog we’d seen on Facebook.

The result?  A two part series that has little to do with wheels and reads more like a horror movie, a true crime drama, a story of intervention, inspiration and a story of an ordinary family with a few kids a couple…

K9 Kamp Part Deux: Go Fetch Yourself

Good evening, I am your intrepid reporter Foley Monster here to report on the second leg of K9 Kamp 20  This weeks challenge is called "Go Fetch Yourself."  The task required that the human, in this case Pop, and the dog, my sister Pocket Dog,  play a simple game of fetch.  But the fiendish planners of the K9 Kamp created a Road Block to hamper the contestants completion of their task.  In this Road Block not only would the dog be fetching the ball but the human would be fetching…

Foley hopes to make some celebrity friends

As some of you know I am an administrator of a site called The Tanner Brigade. It is a small Ning site that our members can send invitations to people we want to join. We like to think of it as a small town with close knit friends, Doggyspace as the big city where you can meet thousands of dogs, and the blogging world as an entire country of dogs.

One of my friends is a fan of the books of Dean Koontz. He often…

Foley Monster's job plan for humans

Good evening my fellow dogs and your devoted humans.  The humans, both Republican and Democrat, Tea Party and I Party, independents and politically lazy,  have brought themselves to the brink of disaster by mismanaging their country to the brink of kibblenomic ruin.  In the past four years since humans have ruined their economy they have proven themselves unable to find their way out of their financial hole.  …

Military Working Dogs

I've mentioned before, I think, that I'm a nerd for working dogs.

I'm fascinated by dogs performing work duties, be it something they were bred for (Border Collies herding sheep), or something they were taught to do (Dobermans as Service Dogs).  A dog performing work that he or she loves is a beautiful thing to watch, and a good dog-human partnership is a well-oiled machine.

Military Working Dogs fall into this category, of course.  In fact, there are around 2, 300 dogs… Continue

Dogs Barking

I don't want to be seen as anti-dog.

However, we have neighbors down the street who this spring, apparently procured two beagles.  They already had a small white fluffy dog (and I apologize, but I can't tell the under twenty pound, ungroomed, fluffy white dog category apart; bichon frise?  Maltese), and the small fluffy white dog has a very peculiar bark, that sounds like the signature scream of women in horror movies.  The beagles, well, howl and bark like hounds in those movies where… Continue
