Sophie likes to follow me around.

What’s really cute (or annoying, depend on your viewpoint) is that if I decide that I would like to stay up and watch a late show, she will keep meowing for attention. She is trying to tell me that she knows it is bedtime and I should shut off the TV. How do I know this? Because when I shut off the TV she stops meowing and heads for the bedroom.

Who said animals can’t tell time? It makes sense, though, because they are so focused on routine to help them feel that all is well in their world. A break in routine can make them anxious and downright whiney. (Much like a human toddler.)

The following-me-around-behavior makes me feel like she is my child, so reminiscent of the days of my children’s toddlerhood when I wasn’t allowed a minute to myself. She also stares intently at what I am doing, probably trying to make sense of it all.

It’s no wonder that we anthropomorphize our pets, because we perceive them to behave like our children sometimes.

That’s okay. I don’t take it too far. I only do it when I want to talk about how much I love my cat and how special I think she is. I’m not alone. Every day I read posts by other bloggers about their animals, telling me similar stories.
