Reports of exotic animals being recovered as pets, completely detached from their natural habitat, and living in neglected conditions, are coming to light with alarming regularity. Rare species of snakes, tortoises, turtles, reptiles, monkeys, sloths, tiger cubs, and birds are being found in the middle of our urban centers as “exotic pets”. While their human owners may have bought them because of a number of reasons, these animals are the first to suffer. Their mistreatment begins right from the moment when they are captured, often violently, and smuggled into our cities to reach potential pet owners.
